Referee training and certification is coordinated by COYSA. This page presents some general information for our referees, but more details are available at www.centraloksoccer.com in the referee section under "clinics".
How do I become a referee?
In order to become a referee, you have to attend (and pass!) a clinic. The Class 5 clinic is designed for 12 and 13 year olds (by March 31) interested in becoming officials. Class 5 certification allows you to referee Mini Soccer games and Assistant Referee (AR) divisional youth games. District certification at the youth level allows you to referee divisional youth games and AR adult games. You have to be at least 14 years old to attend a District clinic. District certification at the adult level (16 or older) allows you to referee adult and youth games.
Note: District (youth and adult) designated referees are akin to the old Class 4 and 3 designations.
You do not need to complete the Class 5 clinic before taking the District clinic, as long as you are old enough to register.
Important: before taking any of the courses you are expected to know the Laws of the Game. You can obtain a copy here>.
*Class 5 Refresher*
This year, all returning Class 5 officials MUST complete a Class 5 Refresher clinic!
Please note:
1. The Class 5 Refresher is not the same as the District Refresher.
2. If you complete a Class 4 clinic (upgrade your certification), you do not have to attend a Class 5 Refresher.
3. There is a $10 fee for the Refresher Clinic.

What else do I need to become an official?
In addition to a whistle and a Law Book, you need a uniform (shirt, shorts, socks, soccer shoes), a digital watch, and flags. Details on all of these get covered in the clinics.
More information about officiating is available at www.bcsoccer.net.
How much does it pay?
Mini Soccer pays $12-$16 per game, depending on the age group.
Divisional soccer pays $10-$25 for an AR, and $18-$45 for a referee.
Select/ Premier Soccer to be determined.
How do I get games?
You will be assigned games by a referee scheduler. Once you've completed a clinic, the referee scheduler will be given your name, age, contact information and an estimate of the level of game you can referee or AR. It's a good idea to email the referee scheduler to let them know that you're interested in doing games and when you're available.
Adult Referees:
All adult referees must now obtain a criminal records check and hand it in to COYSA (you will be reimbursed). You need to take 2 pieces of ID with you and the full COYSA address. You must also complete Risk manangment policy A & B , these also have to be handed into COYSA. These regulations are required by BC Soccer. Click Here for Form A. Click Here for Form B.
What kind of support is there for officials?
Each youth club has a Referee Mentor, whose job is to provide on-field support and suggestions. They're also available to answer questions or address concerns that you have.
In addition, COYSA has a Referee-in-Chief who works to provide development opportunities and support for officials. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns about officiating, please email the Referee-in-Chief.
